Travel to Tanzania

The nearest airport to Haydom is Kilimanjaro International Airport (JRO), served by KLM and Ethiopian Airlines. Flights generally arrive in the evening, so a night stay in Arusha is needed before starting to Haydom.

An alternative is to fly into Jomo Kenyatta International Airport Nairobi (NBO) Kenya, and to travel on to Tanzania by air or road. If you pre-book a place on a shuttle bus from the airport, and arrive on an early morning flight, it may be possible to make the 300km 5-hour trip to Arusha without spending the night in Nairobi. (Note that a transit visa may be required to pass through Kenya. Check with your travel agent.) Website of Impala Shuttle: www.impalashuttle.com

Flying into Dar es Salaam International Airport (DSM) is also possible. However Dar is 650km from Arusha, and you will incur additional expenses and at least an extra day’s travel time on your journey. However for anyone thinking of a holiday on the coast after visiting Haydom, there may be advantages.
For travel by coach from Dar es Salaam, check website of Scandinavia Express Services, www.scandinaviagroup.com or Dar Express.

Before you go for a cheaper flight to Nairobi or Dar, consider whether the extra travel and accommodation costs getting to Arusha, and the extra time it takes make this worthwhile. Discuss the best options with your travel agent.

Accomondation on the way
International flights to Kilimanjaro airport usually arrive in the evening, so you will need a night stay before you travel to Haydom.

There is one hotel at Kilimanjaro airport, a few km from the terminal, which can be reached by taxi: www.moivaro.com/kia_lodge_tanzania.htm

TRAVEL TO HAYDOM

MAF aeroplane

Haydom is 300km from Arusha. Half of that distance is on rough mud roads which are particularly bad in the rainy season December to May.  It is worth phoning the hospital +255272533194 (Office hours 08:00am to 16:00pm) before you travel up to Haydom:
  • We may need to contact you. This is much easier if we know where you are staying
  • Sometimes there is a Haydom vehicle with empty space in Arusha, which you may be able to join.
Otherwise, you have the following options:

By road:
  • Bus to Haydom: The Sunvic Bus travels every day except Sunday to Haydom from Arusha, leaving around 8am from the main bus terminal. The journey takes around 12 hours if all goes well. During bad rains, the bus may terminate at Dongobesh 50km from Haydom or even Mbulu, 80km away. You are advised to check with the driver.
  • Land Cruiser to Haydom: Landcruisers leave Arusha for Haydom every morning between 8am and 10am. They depart from the next road to the west of the main bus stand in Arusha, opposite the Joshmal Hotel. Joshmal Hotel is a very striking and visible 6-floor brown building with blue glass all up the eastern side. It can easily be seen from streets nearby. Tickets for the landcruiser can be bought from the man who sits in the right corner of the verandah of the bar/cafe opposite Joshmal Hotel. (this is best done at least the day before). The landcruisers will park outside this building and leave from there.
  • Take a tour vehicle to Haydom. This is a good option if you are in a group, and want more control over your travelling than is possible in public transport. The cost is about the same as flying, but there is generally more space for people and luggage. Also, the tour company may agree to collect you from the airport, and even do a safari with you on the way (for a price!). The drive will take at least 6 hours.

Other good companies see  http://tanzaniatouristboard.com/directory/tour_operators for more info.

By plane:
  • Fly to Haydom with Mission Aviation Fellowship (MAF) from Arusha airport. (www.maf-tanzania.org). The Northern Shuttle flies each Monday between Dodoma and Arusha, and can usually route via Haydom. The cost to fly Arusha to Haydom (or back) is currently $100 per person, plus $6 departure tax when departing from Arusha. The journey time is between 45 and 55 mins.

You can also charter an aircraft to or from Haydom. MAF operate both a Cessna 206 which can carry 5 passengers and a Cessna 208 that can carry up to 13 passengers. At the agreed Haydom partnership rates for 2009, the 206 from Arusha to Haydom will cost $444 plus departure taxes and the 208, $652.

You can arrange a booking either via Haydom, or directly with MAF.
    E-mail: booking@maf.or.tz or Arusha@maf.or.tz. Phone: +255 26 2352810 (Dodoma office) or +255 762 979558 (Arusha Office).

  • Fly to Haydom with Flying Medical Services (FMS) from Arusha Airport ($360 for the plane) or Kilimanjaro International Airport ($400). This takes 60-90 minutes. Up to 5 people can be carried. (All prices subject to change as defined by the FMS at any time).

Please note that use of Flying Medical Services is limited to people with direct links to Haydom Hospital activities, in order to comply with the terms of the license under which FMS operates. Please check with the Managing Medical Director for further advice.

Note also the following comments from the director of FMS:
“Please be aware that our aircraft has six seats.  It carries a pilot and up to five adult passengers.  Luggage space is limited.  If possible, please avoid carrying large suitcases, as they may not fit into the cargo area. Several small soft bags are better than one large hard one.  Anything larger than 23 cm x 64 cm x 88 cm you may have to carry on your lap! The total combined weight of passengers and luggage may not exceed 350 kilos.  If you and your luggage will exceed this amount, you must inform us before the day of the flight.  We can, if necessary, carry up to 535 kilos.  However, this entails offloading fuel and reducing range.”  flyingmedicalservice.org

All bookings with FMS should be done through Clementina at Haydom.
