SIGNING OF CONTRACT WORKSHOP BUILDING

The plans for a trade school at Haydom have moved a great step forward since the construction of the workshop has started. Soil has been removed from the plot and replaced by stone where the new building will be raised. The hospital`s own lorry has travelled all the way to Arusha to buy cement and iron rods.

A contract for the construction of the workshop building has been signed with a contractor who has formally been hired by the cultural programme.

The attached drawings have been prepared through a co-operation between the expertise at Haydom and the school resource group in Norway who have changed drawings and ideas via internet. (Kristen Fløgstad/ KBK 10.02.10)

The Trade school will be next to the girls dormitory. There is a great demand for a trade school (vocational school) at Haydom. There has been a lot of development in the area after Haydom Lutheran Hopital was formally opened in 1954. Local youth in the area need new competence to assist in the development process and become self-employed. The goal is to open a new school in January 2010.

There is a local planning group in Norway consisting of representatives from the support group Friends of Haydom, Lyngdal secondary school, Rotary Mandal and Lions Mandal.

After consultations at Haydom early October where members of the planning group also were present, Dr Øystein Evjen Olsen forwarded an application to the national office VETA (Vocational Education and Training Authority) with a proposal of prioritized courses for a new school, VETAsøknad oktober 08.  A confirmation letter stating that the application was received and that they were working on the matter was received from VETA 17th November.

A basis for the application was a survey carried out by VETA, VETA rapport september 08.

A preliminary paper documenting the need for a trade school is a concept paper written by Dr Øystein Evjen Olsen 2nd March 2007, VETA rapport september 08.

Vocational Trade school soon in Haydom!

Working groups both at Haydom and in Norway are involved in the planning of a new trade school in Haydom.

VETA (Vocational Education and Training Authority) has approved our plans for a trade school at Haydom and with mechanics as a first choice for the students. The school will have emphasize entrepreneurship to enable the students to start and run their own businesses. To assist more inhabitants at Haydom to develop their skills and to develop their means of income, local people will be offered short courses like agriculture, livestock, IT/secretary, tailoring, home economics/nutrition.

Final approval and construction work
The Norwegian working group. The two working groups are now busy making drawings of the buildings and planning the equipment and tools needed for the first phase. The budgets for investment and running costs will be prepared based on this information. Before the building process can start, the final plans and budgets have to be approved by the board of the Foundation Friends of Haydom. Our hope is to start the construction work during the fall this year.
