EDUCATION
Haydom Lutheran Hospital has always based its activities on a strong element of self-reliance. Education, technical support and own financial sources have therefore been of great importance. The hospital has two schools; Haydom Secondary Upgrading School was started in 1971. This school has the aim of preparing secondary school leavers to further studies, one being The Nurses Training School in Haydom. This now offers a grade A certificate in nursing and midwifery and qualifies as a Diploma course. This school was started in 1982 and there are currently about 90 students enrolled totally.
The training of technical personnel is also an important part of the self-reliance scheme. In particular the hospital sponsors students for basic education and upgrading courses in most fields, including medical assistants, rural medical aids, laboratory assistants, accountants, administration, pharmacy etc. There has also been extensive cooperation between Haydom Lutheran Hospital and the University of Bergen, Norway, of which the MUTAN project in Moshi has been a catalyst for developing a closer bond between the two institutions. There are currently several Ph.D studies being carried out at the hospital and its immediate periphery. These doctorate studies range from Medical Anthropology to subjects related to Reproductive Health, in specific maternal and child mortality and morbidity, measles and HIV.
