Staying at Haydom
Haydom is a friendly but rather conservative place. Please respect the community, and avoid causing any offence by any unintentional act:
Ladies here usually wear clothing that covers the shoulder and the midriff. |
In church ladies usually wear a dress or skirt (remember the sun shines differently here than in Europe, so see-trough skirts needs a half-slip), and men wear trousers rather than shorts. |
If possible avoid the use of alcohol or cigarettes, and particularly within the hospital compound. Alcohol related burden of disease and use of meager household funds for alcohol consumption contributes greatly to the disease and poverty burden of the local community. This is not a problem only in Haydom, but all over the developing world. We at Haydom take this seriously and in addition to having started an alcohol addiction treatment programme we also see our role as contributing to the understanding of the burden alcohol use inflicts on societies, households and individuals. We kindly ask our visitors to help us conveying this message. |
Haydom is quite isolated, but there are things to do. It’s up to you! For example, people can advise you on:
- Walking in the bush
- Climbing mountains, visiting local sights
- Sports and games, cycling, camping (the hospital has a small gym facility)
- Visiting in the village, eating out etc.
- Going to church, listening to choirs, watching traditional dancing
- Make friends with the hospital staff and community
