Permits
Visitors who are going to work, even as volunteers, or study at Haydom usually need one or more of the following: 
  • Registration with the Tanganyika medical or nursing council
  • A residence permit
  • A short-term permit
  • A research permit

For this reason we need to know your plans well in advance: applying for these permits is a time-consuming process. Please see details under the relevant visitor sections

 

Immigration and Permits: More Details
Visitors to Haydom who are not Tanzanian Nationals will need one or more of the following permits in order to enter Tanzania, and remain at Haydom:
 
Tourist Visa
Price $50, valid 3 months, renewable at least once in certain circumstances
For most nationalities this visa is available at the airport or border of entry.
Nationals of some countries must apply well in advance. Prospective visitors are advised to check with their travel agents, or the nearest Tanzanian Embassy or High Commission.
 
Short term permit
Price $100, valid up to 3 months. Must be applied for on reaching Haydom, by all students on clinical attachment or other study project. Requires up to 6 passport photos, a copy of applicant’s passport, details of date of entry to the country and proposed duration of stay at Haydom. This together with the fee of $100 will be taken to Immigration office in Babati, where a short term permit will be issued to cover the duration of stay at Haydom. There is an administrative fee at the hospital of $30 for this application.
 
Residence Permit / Work permit
Application fee $120, duration up to 2 years, duration of application process, up to 6 months!
For people who come to work at Haydom, even in a voluntary capacity, a residence permit is required. For method of application and documents required, please see other annex. The hospital uses the services of the Mission Aviation Fellowship logistics office in Dar Es Salaam for this purpose, and their handling fees are normally an additional $75 - $150.
 
Research Permit
HLH has an extensive research portfolio, and welcome researchers to the hospital. At the hospital there is also an office under the National Institute for Medical Research (NIMR) under the Ministry of Health and Social Welfare in Tanzania. All research planned to be undertaken at the hospital needs to be presented to the hospital through the Managing Medical Director. A full research protocol is needed, including all questionnaires and survey tools, to be presented first to the local research committee for approval. It will then be sent to NIMR for further approval. Upon NIMR clearance all foreign researchers need to apply to the Tanzanian Commission for Science and Technology (COSTECH) for final research clearance. 
 
This is necessary in order to receive a residence permit in Tanzania. In general a research cleance is needed for all research activities involving patients, community respondents and clinical / laboratory methods not in routine use at the hospital. In addition it is important to know how the research will be disseminated. The aim of the hospital is to provide research facilitation that is relevant to the challenges of our local community, the hospital and the research priorities of Tanzania in order to be as policy relevant as possible. There is a $300 fee to both NIMR and COSTECH as well as an $80 handling fee to the hospital per candidate. Please follow the links to COSTECH and NIMR for further information.
