New web-based program – easier work for staff, safer treatment for patients
Care2x for Haydom Lutheran Hospital
Care2x is a web-based program for handling patient information on various levels. The patients will be registered when they come to OPD or when they are admitted.
First time they attend the hospital they will be registered with the same personal information that is recorded today. Then all results from lab and the radiology department, all prescriptions, coding of all operations and all diagnoses will be registered. They will then be available for later visits. This will make the work for doctors and clinical officers easier, and the treatment for the patients safer.
Different types of reports
We will also use the program to make reports, both on an individual basis as a lab report and aggregated reports at our need. The program will communicate with webERP to aid in giving economical reports and help in recording stock of medicine.
Final testing – program soon to be introduced
The program is already in use other places in the world, but with different functionality. At Haydom we will use the program for both inpatients, outpatients and outreach, including vaccines. The program is under development and we do the final testing of new functionality in a lab with several computers linked to the hospital network. When we start using the program in our daily work, these computers will be part of the equipment in use. We will have dedicated secretaries handling input and output of patient data, and when we see how things work out, we can consider expanded use of the program.
New documentation charts
Different documentation charts for different use
The daily documentation of treatment relies on a set of documents that are all well established at the hospital. The first time the patient is admitted, one special form is used for registering personal information and documenting the present and past medical history. Then we have charts for registering different lab tests, specific radiology requests, treatment sheet for the doctor to order the drugs and for the nurses to register temperature and the list is much longer.
Improved documents soon to be finished
Some of these charts are well functioning and serve their purpose completely. Others do have minor needs of improvement, and over the last few years, several people with medical education have contributed to the development of these documents. Now parallel with the development of Care2x, the work on the documentation charts has been intensified and is close to be finished and reviewed by key personnel.
Important changes made
The most important change from the perspective of patient safety, is the registration of what doses of the prescribed medicines have been given. Also there will be new charts for the Intensive Care Unit, new sheets for both doctors notes and nurses' notes and new neonatal observation chart among other.
